Chocolate Farm Tour Option 1 - Indigenous
TripAdvisor
The highly-rated Oreba Chocolate Farm excursion is a great way to experience indigenous Bocas del Toro culture. It starts with a 20-minute boat ride from Nayara Bocas del Toro through Dolphin Bay on the west side of our island.
Upon arrival, your guide will lead you on a 15- to 20-minute hike through the rainforest — you may see poison dart frogs, sloths, howler monkeys, and toucans — ending at the chocolate farm. Here, the indigenous Ngäbe community grows some of the highest-grade cacao in the world and makes organic dark chocolate the traditional way. You’ll learn the process of growing, harvesting, fermenting, drying, and ultimately roasting cacao to make chocolate. A tour highlight involves watching Ngäbe women in traditional dress make chocolate the way they’ve done for centuries.
The tour concludes with a classic Ngäbe meal of vegetables, roots, and chicken. You can also sample the chocolate and buy some to bring home with you.
